i have set a budget of around £200 - £300

By “special friend” do you mean some one you are romantically involved with? Then yes, get heart shapes. If no ramance, no heart shapes.

As far as gold or white gold, look at other jewelry she wears regularly, that would give you an idea of her preference. If she wears glasses, make sure what ever you get her doesn't clash with them.

Only you can decide on amount spend, depending on your involvement with her and your budget.

For my thought, people in this range of age are tend to wear a White Gold instead of the gold because its look more natural and young. A diamond pendant its really nice but to make sure that you’re not out of your range budget, the solid pendant can help that. For the shape, a heart shape consist a big meaning and it is really suitable for some one special even he or she is your friend. So i think a heart shape is superior.

have you thought a buying her a neckalace with her name written in with the gold? you can get a pendent of her birthstone on it too……that way she doesnt take it as you forcing a love gift on her and it will be something that she has the ability to and would appreciate for a very long time ( id go with it in gold though)

I think it would depend on your relationship with her. I personally wear yellow gold and because of all the conflict of blood diamonds I like gemstones. I wear rings on all my fingers and toes but I think if I was receiving a gift from a friend a nice pair of birthstone earrings or pendant and earring set would be nice.
