i found a necklace in my mothers jewelry box and we are curious to if it is made of silver, as it looks quite delecate. My mum said that if it says 19 or something on the chain somewhere then it is silver. the necklace i have, has a diamond with some letters or numbers in it…it's too small to read…..

Sterling Silver is usually stamped 925. Older silver that's been sitting around for a while will become tarnished and look blackish, or have blackish patches on it - especially around any joints. Best way to find out is to dump it in some Silvo or other silver polish, or you can buy special cloths for jewellery and if it comes up nice and sparkly it's probably silver. If it's already nice and sparkly chances are it's some other amalgam and not unique. If it's not stamped a jeweller would probably be able to tell you for certain what you've got.

Now it could also be a plated chain or a white gold chain or a platinum chain .. If you were to take it to a jeweller's and just ask if they have the ability to look at the numbers through their magnifying glass…to let you know what it is .. THEY really shouldn't mind.

I think you should take it into a jeweler as they will have the most thorough answer. If is is quite thick then sometimes it has some little tiny symbols on them. That can mean it'd silver. Here’s an example:

You see inside it how there are those tiny symbols? That means it's silver.

it should be stamped. I don't know if the stamps are recognised worldwise (I don't know why they wouldn't be)

but “925″ is siver and (I think - I can't quite read it) gold is stamped “375″
