Is it expensive to make jewelry?
Apr 8, 2009
I have been looking at stores such as “Michaels” and other crafts stores and it does not seem that it would be terribly high-priced. I could make a necklace for $15 -$25 dollars depending on the stones and detail work (after the enitial tools are purchased)
Am I accurate in my estimation of how much this would cost?

I'm making the jewelry as gifts for my bridesmaids, so I want it to be good.
Answer: It all depends on the quality of the beads you purchase ultimately. If you use semi-precious stones or swarovski crystal, it will cost a lot more per piece. If you use glass beads (and there are some really nice glass pieces available), then it won't cost as much. I make jewelry pretty regularly and I've kind of decided that I'd rather spend my money on the findings and not the beads, but that's just me and the way I select to save money. I buy lots of beads at Michael's. I think they’ve a terrific selection. Good luck!
Answer: it all depends on how nice the jewelry is supposed to look, how valuable it is supposed to be, how long it is supposed to last etc. You need approx. 10 different tools to get you started with 'jewelry making', some as pricey as $ 50 (each). But you can - of course - buy cheap pliers for $ 2 - it just all depends.
I would use fairly nice material for the bridesmaids jewelry. You want them to keep it and admire it for years to come, right?
Answer: Make a necklace 15-$25? Oh, maybe just the common piece and cheap beads all around the street corner.. It is very easy to make such pieces, little handicraft works…
