Is there a way I have the ability to save damaged jewelry?

my mother used silver polish to shine my silver indian necklace set, but it came out looking all rusty and charcoal black. My mom said she was going to try another cleaner to salvage it, but I think it wasn't pure silver to begin with. Either way, is there a way to salvage it and if so what kind of stuff should i use?
