I am looking to buy somme earrings on ebay. I notice a lot of earring are either gold filled for gold plated. What do I need to know about this material, in terms of quality? Will gold filled or gold plated tarnish or change color over time? I know, I’m not paying for solid gold; however, is GF or GP worth the less price or don't purchase at all?
Answer: Only purchase gold plate if you're looking for a costume jewelry piece (same goes for gold vermeil). The layer of gold is VERY thin over a base metal and will wear away on a piece you wear often. Gold fill is much more durable and holds up very well. If it is 14/20 gold fill, that means that 20% is 14kt gold. The gold is on the outside and the core (”fill”) is usually brass. I’ve many gold fill pieces I've had for years, cleaning many times, and they still looking wonderful.
Answer: you can select gold filled jewelry…
